Mutton Soup is a delicious and hearty dish that is made using mutton (goat) bones, meat and the basic spices available in our pantry. Mutton (Goat meat) is rich in iron, protein and many other vitamins which promotes in the strong muscles and overall good health.
This soup recipe has been passed on to generations in my family. My grandmother used to make this soup when we were kids. And even as adults, we still love this soup at home. I’m following the same recipe for my kids too. This is such a simple and nutritious dish.
Mutton soup helps in increasing the hemoglobin count in women. This is really healthy for pregnant women and strengthens the bones and muscles. Even after delivery, they say these soups help in speedy recovery. If you are planning to introduce non-vegetarian food for your baby, this soup is the apt recipe. This soup is good for the growth of the baby and will help in bone strengthening, as 9 – month is the phase where they begin walking and are becoming more active. Do consult your doctor before introducing any new food.
This soup tastes excellent as such or can be had with some idli / dosai which is the way I prefer to have it. Just mix some soup with some mashed steamed rice, idli or dosai for the babies/toddlers. As I have added ginger, this soup goes light on your tummy. For adults, you can add more pepper and have this soup as such. Try out this recipe following the simple steps below.

Ingredients
- Mutton bones – 1/4 kg ( add some pieces of meat as well )
- Small onions / Shallots – 7
- Tomato – 1/2 cup
- Ginger – 1 small piece
- Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp
- Whole Pepper – 1 tsp
- Whole Jeera – 2 tsp
- Nallennai / Sesame oil / Gingelly oil – 2 tbsp
- Salt – To taste
Procedure
- Clean the mutton. Prepare all the ingredients and keep it ready.

- In a small mixer jar, add in the jeera and pepper. Just grind it to a coarse powder using the pulse mode.

- Next add in the shallots and ginger to the mixer and grind them using the pulse mode. It should be a coarse mixture.

- In a pressure cooker, add in the mutton bones, turmeric powder, ground pepper and jeera, ground onion and ginger and 3 tsp nallennai. Add in water till all the ingredients are just soaked enough, around 2.5 cups water.

- Now switch on the stove, and heat up all the ingredients. Close the cooker and cook in medium flame for 6 whistles and simmer for 10 mins.

- Open the cooker when the pressure settles on its own.
- Check whether the mutton is cooked well. If not, add 1/2 cup water and cook for another 4 whistles in medium flame.
- Add salt and simmer for 10 mins.

- Add in coriander leaves and switch off the stove.

- Serve with rice, idli or dosa or just enjoy the soup as such.

Notes
- The coarse mixture of the ingredients adds to the texture of this dish. If possible, do use a mortar and pestle or even “ammi”. Its super yummy when made this way.
- If you are thinking it is very coarse, the jeera and pepper can be finely ground, but do not paste the shallots and ginger smooth, as it will not give the same taste and texture to the soup.
- If you think you are not comfortable in adding whole pepper while making for babies, you can reduce / avoid the quantity of pepper.
- Do not skip nallennai, as it is healthy and adds more flavor to the soup.
